Understanding powerlifting scoring systems

DOTS

DOTS replaced Wilks in many federations. It uses a 4th-degree polynomial to normalize performance across bodyweights. Adopted by many IPF-affiliated federations as the primary comparison metric [1].

IPF GL (Goodlift Points)

The official IPF scoring system uses an exponential model rather than a polynomial. It is considered more accurate at extreme bodyweights and is used in all IPF competitions for best lifter awards [2].

Wilks (Classic)

The original Wilks formula (1994) uses a 5th-degree polynomial. While largely superseded, it remains widely recognized and is still used by some federations for historical continuity [3].

Wilks-2

An updated version of the original Wilks with revised coefficients (2020). It better normalizes performance at the extremes of the bodyweight spectrum while maintaining the familiar Wilks methodology.
